A Breezy Living Room and Blue

Soft, hazy colors and natural textures give this Shelter Island, New York, living room a breezy elegance. Homeowners Harriet Maxwell Macdonald and Andrew Corrie sanded the oak floors, leaving them unfinished, and sanded and whitewashed the pine-plank walls and botanical tiles. The couple's English whippet, Blue, rests on a Snooze sofa from their New York store, Ochre. The blue painting is by a friend, Leora Armstrong.

The sculptural aluminum dining table base was given to Macdonald by a London friend who made them for restaurants: "He painted them, but I asked for mine unfinished. Covered Deck

With its rock collection and tree-stump seats, the deck is a low-key island paradise. Ochre's clean-lined dining table and bench are made of cedar from old Manhattan water towers, weathered to a soft gray. Homeowner Andrew Corrie rigged a bamboo framework to support his homemade roof of lashed bamboo poles.
